Overview
FCO-6K is a miniature 32.768 kHz crystal-controlled oscillator (XO) in a 2.0×1.6 mm SMD package designed for ultra-low power RTC domains and portable electronics. Compared with discrete timing crystals for RTC, the integrated XO simplifies design while ensuring stable timekeeping. For broader context on the ecosystem of timing devices used in electronics, see our engineering guide.

Design-In Notes
- Place a 0.1 µF bypass capacitor as close as possible between Vdd and GND pads.
- Keep the output trace short; terminate near the receiving pin to minimize coupling.
- Observe load capacitance (15 pF) and input thresholds for clean logic transitions.
- Reference: how crystal oscillators work (engineer’s refresher).
Design Tips
Power & Layout
- Decouple Vdd with 0.1 µF within <2 mm; add 1 µF bulk near the rail source.
- Provide a solid ground; avoid split planes under the XO and OUT trace.
- Route OUT away from high dV/dt nets; consider 22–47 Ω series damping at OUT.
- For long routes/multiple loads, buffer OUT; keep total C close to 15 pF.
Logic & Timing
- Use tri-state (Pin 1) for deep-sleep; follow 0.7×Vdd / 0.3×Vdd thresholds.
- Budget start-up time (≤20 ms) before RTC timekeeping is used.
- Verify MCU RTC VIH/VIL at your Vdd option (1.8/2.5/3.3 V).
- Need trade-offs? See selecting timing crystals for RTC accuracy.
EMC / Reliability
- Place ESD at connectors, not directly on XO OUT; avoid extra capacitive load.
- Avoid high-DA conformal coatings above XO; keep board clean to minimize drift.
- Considering alternatives? Read crystal-controlled vs MEMS oscillators.
- Validate frequency across voltage, load, temperature; log drift during burn-in.
Electrical Specifications
Unless otherwise noted, conditions are at 25 ± 5 °C and 40–70% RH; no-load for current values.
